Travis Magrane

  • Youth Music Project’s executive director, Travis Magrane has been teaching and performing music for more than 15 years. When he first came out west, his first teaching gig was outside; he spent several years in youth outdoor education coordinating programs that take kids backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, and learning all about natural history.

He’s had many interesting jobs, from owner of a private music-teaching studio to urban shepherd using goats and sheep. Here at Youth Music Project, he works to provide direction for the programs in both day-to-day operations and long-term objectives. With more than 30 staff members and over 900 students every week, it’s a lot of work to keep all the moving parts functioning as a well-oiled machine!

The thing Travis loves most about working at Youth Music Project is being part of an organization that brings joy to those it serves; nothing beats the excitement on the face of a child who has just learned a cool new song or riff on their instrument of choice. He loves the “excitement and nervous energy” of Student Concert Week as kids take the stage and show off the growth of their musicianship.

Travis loves playing the guitar in his spare time, and can’t possibly choose a favorite style of music — from rock, to folk, to swing, bluegrass, ragtime, and more, there are just too many to pick from! If he could be any musical instrument, he would naturally be a guitar.
